Today is the big day, First Communion! - April 17, 2016

Today is the big day, First Communion!
All the "outwardly" signs are done, the parties are planned, the dresses and suits picked out, and pictures taken. The students have gone to church, attended classes, studied and talked about their faith. When they walk down the aisle of the church, they continue a long history in all Catholic families. It's a big responsibility for such little shoulders, but I think they are up for the challenge. I am thinking today about what it means to be God’s child. As I reflect on my children’s First Holy Communion, it marked the beginning of a journey. One that led them closer to Jesus. While I cannot be there every day for my children like I was when they were younger, I know that Jesus is and always will be. Taking Holy Communion every week at Mass strengthens us. It gives us the armor and shield we need to go out into the world and face some of the difficulties that come our way. It's also gives us tremendous joy in the beautiful faith that we have. For we are His sons and daughters. I know that my children will always have Him close in the Eucharist at Mass, and in the tabernacle of the nearest church. I hope that you will take a moment and reflect on your First Holy Communion. Remembering how you felt. My youngest son said that he felt “taller” after he received the Eucharist for the first time. Below is a letter to all First Communicants. I hope that you will continue to pray for these children beyond this one special day.

Dear First Communicants, We are very excited for you as you make your First Holy Communion. How hard it is for us to believe this day has come! It seems like only yesterday that you were presented to the Church for your Baptism. As you receive Him for the first time, always remember that Jesus is in you, and with you at all times. He will help and guide you to do what is right, and to keep you in the light of Christ. The more you receive Him the closer you will be to God, helping you to become the person God wants and needs you to be. Now we share in your joy in coming to the Eucharist, one of the Sacraments of Christian Initiation. You will share in the holy meal that our parish shares Sunday after Sunday. We want you to remember this moment, and keep it close to your heart. Every time you receive Him in Holy Communion, remember the awe and reverence that you feel now. Jesus is with you, and in you protecting and guiding you. We will be with you to help you live as a member of Christ’s Body, the Church. And we will continue to pray for you and care for you all the days of our lives. Jesus loves you so very much, and so do we!

Love and Blessings,
