Azpetia, Spain--Birthplace of Ignatius Loyola 13/9/2016

From Lourdes we took a train, then a bus, to Azpetia. Jim has long admired St. Ignatius, and wanted to visit his birthplace since we were pretty much in the neighborhood. We are really glad that we did. Our hotel was practically next door to the Basilica of St. Ignatius. Ignatius was from a family whose social station was lower nobility, which meant that they had money, property, and some influence. Although he was wild as a youth, Ignatius "found religion", so to speak, when recovering from wounds suffered in battle in Pamplona. The Basilica of St Ignatius is built around the tower home in which Ignatius was born, and where he recovered from his battle wounds. There is now a chapel in the very room where St. Ignatius spent his long recovery, and where he eventually dedicated his life to God.
