Is God calling you to the Ministry of Lector?

What does it mean to be a Lector?

Proclamation of the Word of God is an action of evangelization.  Evangelization is the mission of the Church.  In the context of the Liturgy, Lectors have the sublime duty to proclaim the Word of God to the assembly in the context of the First and Second Readings.  typically, the First Reading is taken from the Old Testament.  the Second Reading is taken from the New Testament.

When do I Lector?

Once trained, your name will be added to the schedule and incorporated into the Sunday Mass rotation.  You will have the opportunity to Lector at the 5:00 p.m. Vigil Mass on Saturdays, the 8:30 a.m. or 11:00 a.m. Mass on Sundays; as well as Holy Days of Obligation.

How do I become trained as a Lector?

After being in contact withour Coordinator of Lectors, you will begin the process.  The Diocese will provide one training session for you as will the parish.  After you've completed these two steps and have been incorporated into the Sunday Mass rotations, you will begin your ministry.

What is the general time commitment for this ministry?

"proclaiming Scripture is a ministry that involves your whole life.  So make Scripture a part of your life each week, especially the week prior to proclaiming."  Each Lector will be given a special workbook that helps with the preparation process.  Reading the Sacred Scripture to the assembly in the context of the Liturgy is a sacred responsibility.  It requires a certain amount of prayerful preparation and practice.
