Coming to St. Charles Religious Education Curriculum

Level 1 Atrium, Ages 3-6

Parents are generally consoled when they learn that our children's experience of God is a mystery to be respected.  God is already in a relationship with our kids, even now at this very moment.  Children desire to hear His voice and God wants to speak with them in clarity.  Imagine, parents, a method of religious education that allows God the time and space to instruct our children Himself, directly, by teaching them the spiritual life at a very young age through the living, present, reality of the Holy Spirit.

Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is a Montessori method of faith formation for children.  The method is opposite of our traditional, westernized, pattern of instruction that features a teacher or catechist who creatively informs the minds of children by sowing information, data, skills and intelligence.  Instead, this mysterious method of catechesis is actually real training in the spiritual life that is primarily child directed.  It allows God to speak with and instruct our children Himself, through Jesus’s parables.

Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS) creates a sacred prayer space for children called an atrium.  Within the atrium are numerous tactile “works” that allow kids to experience what they hear and pray.  For example, in hearing an adult read the Parable of the Good Shepherd, children physically maneuver miniature, hand crafted, sheep and shepherd while contemplating the inner life of the parable.  Each parable is handcrafted.  An 18” inch high altar to be set; a two feet high baptismal candle; the city of Jerusalem cast to scale in wood; the Holy Land; manipulative Liturgical calendars; vestments for children, and much more!  Each work is designed to draw kids into prayer and contemplation.

Please stay tuned and contact Benjamin if you can be involved with this project.  Check our website for updated information, and see the upcoming bulletin addendum’s to donate time, works, materials and supplies:  bdarnell@stcharleskc.com or 816-436-0880 ext. 214.

A complete list of atrium needs will be published soon.
